Day 2 of the ICPS Conference field trips! 🌿🇳🇱 We s Day 2 of the ICPS Conference field trips! 🌿🇳🇱 We started at Corn. Bak, where owner Peter Bak took us through his gigantic greenhouses. Peter has a fascinating history as a breeder of bromeliads and Venus flytraps and is now shifting more of his focus toward breeding carnivorous plants. They produce 4 million flytraps a year from SEED!!! As a Venus flytrap fan, it was especially exciting to see some of the cultivars they created, including Venus flytrap ‘Flex’ and ‘Croc’. 🪰🌱 But what really caught my attention were the amazing ant plants! 😍 Anyone who knows me knows how much I love myrmecophytic plants, so I could have spent all day looking at them. We then headed to the renovated Amsterdam Botanical Garden for a guided tour. The new state-of-the-art greenhouse houses an impressive African plant collection, along with, of course, some carnivorous plants. #ICPSConference #CarnivorousPlants #VenusFlytrap #AntPlants #Amsterdam
Day 2 of field trips at the ICPS Conference! 🌿🚌 I Day 2 of field trips at the ICPS Conference! 🌿🚌 I had the pleasure of sitting next to Leo Song Jr. for our bus ride from Leiden to Amsterdam and back. Leo has been involved in the carnivorous plant community for decades. He told me about his role in the early development of the ICPS and how the society grew out of the Carnivorous Plant Newsletter and the work being done at Cal State Fullerton. He joined the CPN team in 1977, and the International Carnivorous Plant Society name was officially adopted a few years later. He also shared stories about some of the incredible plants he worked with and helped develop, including Pinguicula ‘Pirouette’ — inspired by his daughter’s ballet years 🩰 — Pinguicula ‘Titan’, Venus flytrap ‘Jaws’, and many others. Sarracenia ‘Leo Song’ was a plant that originated with Leo, and Peter D’Amato later named and registered the cultivar in Leo’s honor. We also talked about his work with Oxalis gigantea in Chile, along with so many other stories from his decades of working with plants. And Leo is 85 years old! It was an incredible honor to sit beside him, hear his stories, and learn from someone who has contributed so much to the carnivorous plant community. 🌱 #ICPSConference #CarnivorousPlants #Pinguicula #Sarracenia #PlantLegends

I am now officially an international speaker extra I am now officially an international speaker extraordinaire! 🌍🎤 Today I had the pleasure of presenting alongside Hendre Barnard @cape_carnivores at the 15th International Carnivorous Plant Society Conference in Leiden. Our session, “Inspire versus Protect: Building a Community of Enthusiasts,” explored a fascinating—and sometimes uncomfortable—question: how can the passion that inspires us to love and collect plants also put pressure on wild populations? Leiden! 🇳🇱🌿 Today we visited the @naturalismuseum, Leiden! 🇳🇱🌿 Today we visited the @naturalismuseum, and it was one of the best natural history museums I’ve ever visited! 🤩 The collections were incredible—from fossils, bones, and taxidermy to interactive exhibits and dinosaurs. 🦖🦴 I especially enjoyed the sections on convergent evolution and, of course, carnivorous plants! 🌱🪰 We also got to see their amazing book collection, including some fascinating works on carnivorous plants. 📚🌿 I loved how the exhibits explored everything from life and death to how organisms attract mates. It was fascinating to see how the Netherlands presents these topics in an educational and engaging way for kids. 🔬👀 Tomorrow, the ICPS Conference begins! 🌿🎉 #Leiden #Naturalis #CarnivorousPlants #ICPS #Netherlands
Next stop: Antwerp! 🇧🇪 We packed A LOT into our ti Next stop: Antwerp! 🇧🇪 We packed A LOT into our time here: 🐘 Antwerp Zoo — one of the oldest zoos in the world, founded in 1843, and located right next to Antwerp’s spectacular Central Station. One of the more memorable moments was watching the zoo feed a deer to the lions. 🦌🦁 And, in what may be the most appropriate coincidence ever, there was a vegetarian-only food truck right in front of the lions. 🚂 Antwerp Central Station 👗 MoMu – ModeMuseum Antwerpen — because can’t you tell I’m fashion forward? 🍫 Chocolate Nation — an immersive celebration of Belgian chocolate. And yes, I had second helpings. 🌿 Maatschappij / Plantentuin Den Botaniek — a beautiful botanical garden tucked right into the city. Huge thanks to city worker Tomas for giving us a behind-the-scenes tour! ⛪ St. Andrew’s Church and the breathtaking Cathedral of Our Lady And, of course, we ate our way through Antwerp too! 😋 We had Iranian food for the first time, and it was absolutely delicious. And once again, I’m lucky to have an excellent roommate and travel partner for the second ICPS conference in a row: Dr. Kadeem Gilbert (Cornell University, and PhD from Harvard (ever heard of it? 😂). Kadeem specializes in carnivorous plants, specifically the leaf adaptations associated with insect microfauna and prey capture. 🌱🪰 So, if you have questions about carnivorous plants… let me know.
