My “dead” plant is still alive! 🌱✨ One of My “dead” plant is still alive! 🌱✨ One of my non-carnivorous favorites, Euphorbia platyclada, is naturally leafless and grows in flat, branching stems that look almost like sticks — which is why it can appear completely brown and lifeless.

Native to Madagascar, this species thrives in arid conditions and stores water in its succulent stems. Like many euphorbias, it produces a milky sap that’s toxic if ingested, helping protect it from herbivores. Despite its unusual appearance, it’s surprisingly hardy and a fascinating example of how plants can adapt to tough environments.

Euphorbia platyclada is generally a slow grower. Its leafless, branching stems develop gradually, especially when grown in pots or indoors, and it can take years to form a dense, interesting clump.

One of the first compound hybrids from the Borneo Exotics line, this plant is an absolute standout for both its looks and performance. It’s incredibly easy to grow, produces pitchers consistently, and those pitchers last a long time — making it a perfect candidate for hanging baskets.

Coloration and form can vary from plant to plant, but this one’s vibrant red peristome makes it clear why it earned the name “Mimi’s Kiss.” ❤️

This elegant species is famous for the distinct white band just below the rim of its pitchers — the “albo marginata” that gives it its name. That white fringe isn’t just for looks; it attracts termites, which the plant then traps and digests. Talk about a specialized diet! 🐜

Native to Borneo, Sumatra, and Peninsular Malaysia, this species thrives in sunny, open habitats and often forms beautiful colonies on exposed slopes.

In the wild, some populations of Nepenthes albomarginata even grow in pure sand, enduring harsh sun and seasonal fires — often burning down to the roots, only to resprout and thrive again. 🔥🌱

Unlike most pitcher plants that rely on catching insects, Nepenthes ampullaria has a unique twist. This species often lives on the forest floor and specializes in collecting fallen leaves instead of bugs! The decaying leaves break down inside the pitchers, providing the plant with extra nutrients.

We call them the vegetarian carnivorous plant!

Native to the rainforests of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, these charming pitchers form tight clusters that look almost like a carpet of little cups — perfect for catching rainforest debris (or admiration from passing goldfish).

Nature always finds clever ways to thrive — both above and below the waterline. 🌱✨
Fish update! 🐟 The fish are still here — and Fish update! 🐟 The fish are still here — and still absolutely adorable. For those keeping track, our little aquatic family includes 16 telescope goldfish, 4 Thai orandas and 7 dojo loaches.

One fun change: Pinot Noir, our tricolor Thai oranda, has gone through quite the transformation! He’s lost almost all of his black coloring and is now a brilliant bright red. Nature never ceases to surprise us — whether it’s in the backyard or in our greenhouse pond. ❤️✨

It was definitely ready for Halloween — perfectly spooky as ever. We just happened to be a little delayed because we were galavanting around Sri Lanka! Sometimes travel slows us down, but the plants keep doing their thing, looking amazing whether we’re home or away. 👻🌿

Check out what my dad invented — using leftover plastic pieces from a kids’ fort kit we bought for $5 at a thrift store! We originally used the kit to make our own cold frames, but he found another clever use for the scraps. Patent pending… just like his legendary tape dispenser made from an old milk crate 😆

It’s a good reminder that we probably already have enough stuff in the world — we just need to get creative with how we repurpose and reuse materials. Reduce, reuse, reinvent! ♻️

We just spent an incredible 15 days in Sri Lanka and a full day in Zurich, Switzerland during our extended layover — what a year it’s been! 2025 has treated us so well. Earlier this summer we traveled to Uganda to trek with chimpanzees and gorillas 🦍🐒 — and we’ll be sharing highlights from all of these adventures between now and the end of the year.

Looking ahead, we’re beyond excited for a HUGE Borneo Exotics import arriving in early March 2026! 🌱
Pre-orders start Friday, February 13th, so mark your calendars — it’s going to be a good one!

Now that the temperatures are cooling down, we’re taking a much-needed break. We’re purposefully not shipping right now — focusing instead on prepping the plants for spring, avoiding the high holiday shipping costs, and protecting plants from chilly weather. But don’t worry — we’re still here and growing!

Today we sowed several trays of Sarracenia, which had been in the fridge stratifying for 4–6 weeks. We’ve also been busy preserving our tomato, bean, and pepper harvest 🍅🫛🌶️. My dad even built covers for our raised beds out of scrap greenhouse materials. With freezing temps on the way this weekend, we’ve pulled the tomatoes and started fresh with lettuce, radishes, and carrots — all ready to enjoy the cool weather ahead. 🥬🥕🌱

This simple step helps us keep track of which pollen came from which male. The top of the Nepenthes spike has been pollinated by one male, and the bottom by another, allowing us to make multiple hybrids from a single female flower.

On other crosses or species, the female spike can grow quite long — which means even more zip ties can be added for additional crosses. It’s a simple but powerful way to stay organized during hybridization! ✨
