We always remind potential customers: you should n We always remind potential customers: you should not get a carnivorous plant to solve a pest problem. Do they eat insects? Yes. Will they eat all of them? No.🪰 Carnivorous plants should be appreciated for their beauty first and foremost. The fact that they catch and digest insects is a fascinating bonus—not a replacement for proper pest control.🪲 That said, if you grow them outside through the end of summer, you’ll often notice something pretty incredible: pitchers absolutely packed with lovebugs, June bugs, ants, wasps, and more. Nature takes care of the rest.🐜 And here’s a perfect example of why that happens.🪳 This is Nepenthes ‘Mimi’ (selected cultivar: BE-3823). The scientific name of the hybrid that produced this outstanding cultivar is Nepenthes ventricosa × (maxima × talangensis). Created in May 2008, it was for many years licensed exclusively to a small number of large European nurseries for mass-market production. Due to popular demand, it is now available for wider worldwide distribution. The cultivar was named for the wife of Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda—renowned naturalist, conservationist, and long-time friend of Borneo Exotics in Sri Lanka. And beyond its story, it’s simply a fantastic plant: a super-fast, easy grower and an excellent beginner Nepenthes. When kept well-pruned, it produces impressive clusters of pitchers—and as you can see, once ants discover the nectar, they quickly form a line… and a few inevitably find their way inside. #CarnivorousPlants #Nepenthes #PitcherPlants #PlantEducation #PlantCollectors

Plants. 🌱 We sell carnivorous plants to pay the bills… but we grow our own food to feed ourselves and take control of what we eat. The next few weekends we’re laying low and getting ready for some big May events, while behind the scenes we’re busy planting our 1-acre homestead with vegetables and native plants — and of course, repotting and caring for all the carnivorous plants. 🥕 This is our first harvest of carrots and radishes for the season! And yeah — I earned a Master’s in Global Sustainability from the University of South Florida with a focus on Food Sustainability & Security… and I’m self-employed. Why?
