We always remind potential customers: you should not get a carnivorous plant to solve a pest problem.

Do they eat insects? Yes. Will they eat all of them? No.🪰

Carnivorous plants should be appreciated for their beauty first and foremost. The fact that they catch and digest insects is a fascinating bonus—not a replacement for proper pest control.🪲

That said, if you grow them outside through the end of summer, you’ll often notice something pretty incredible: pitchers absolutely packed with lovebugs, June bugs, ants, wasps, and more. Nature takes care of the rest.🐜

And here’s a perfect example of why that happens.🪳

This is Nepenthes ‘Mimi’ (selected cultivar: BE-3823).

The scientific name of the hybrid that produced this outstanding cultivar is Nepenthes ventricosa × (maxima × talangensis). Created in May 2008, it was for many years licensed exclusively to a small number of large European nurseries for mass-market production. Due to popular demand, it is now available for wider worldwide distribution.

The cultivar was named for the wife of Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda—renowned naturalist, conservationist, and long-time friend of Borneo Exotics in Sri Lanka.

And beyond its story, it’s simply a fantastic plant: a super-fast, easy grower and an excellent beginner Nepenthes. When kept well-pruned, it produces impressive clusters of pitchers—and as you can see, once ants discover the nectar, they quickly form a line… and a few inevitably find their way inside.

We sell carnivorous plants to pay the bills… but we grow our own food to feed ourselves and take control of what we eat.

The next few weekends we’re laying low and getting ready for some big May events, while behind the scenes we’re busy planting our 1-acre homestead with vegetables and native plants — and of course, repotting and caring for all the carnivorous plants.

🥕 This is our first harvest of carrots and radishes for the season!

And yeah — I earned a Master’s in Global Sustainability from the University of South Florida with a focus on Food Sustainability & Security… and I’m self-employed. Why? Because continuing education matters — and once you really understand how our food systems and ecosystems are struggling, it changes how you choose to live and work.

These quirky creations have been part of our signature style for years — even featured on our business cards — and we’re bringing them back out for this Saturday’s plant sale!

🎥 HUGE surprise in the variegated Nepenthes corner

🎥 HUGE surprise in the variegated Nepenthes corner! 🌿

Our greenhouse has been packed for months, but with this spring weather we’ve finally been getting in there to clean, organize, and rediscover a few things…

The other day, I was walking outside the greenhouse and spotted bright purple flowers 👀

To my surprise (and honestly, part of the plan working out!), it was Utricularia longifolia — a plant I’ve had for 10–15 years that has NEVER bloomed.

A while back, I tucked a small piece into a 3-gallon Nepenthes gracilis ‘Green’ variegated pot, and sure enough… once it filled in, it finally decided to bloom! 🌸

What made the difference? Likely a mix of:

More space to spread
Night temps dropping between 59–80°F
Letting it dry out, then watering heavily
And honestly… mostly just ignoring it 😄

Sometimes that’s all it takes!

⚠️ And before anyone asks — none of the variegated Nepenthes are for sale… I’ve got to keep a few favorites for myself!

🐳 About Flytrap ‘CCCP Orca’ 🐋

First registered (submitted): October 7, 2021

Selected by Craig Heath from Dionaea ‘Whale’ seedlings, this cultivar stands out with:

🐳 Short, wavy, uneven “pitchfork” teeth
🐙 Bright ruby-red traps with bold lime green edges
🐬 Three dark trigger hairs per side
🦑 Distinct red “bleeding” patterns on the outside of the traps
🐠 Compact rosette growth with traps around 2.5 cm long

A vigorous grower that produces rich red coloration through the season. Named “Orca” for its bold, wavy trap form.

We were so busy today at the Spring Plant & Herb F

We were so busy today at the Spring Plant & Herb Festival hosted by the Cabarrus County Cooperative Extension / 4-H that we forgot to make a post this morning!🪳

But here’s the best part of the day…

In a former life, I was a middle school biology & agriculture teacher and an FFA advisor—and today came full circle. I met the local Ag teacher/FFA advisor and donated a few carnivorous plants to his classroom, which already has a hydroponic setup and a LOT of grow lights. Those students are in for something special.🪰

Thank you Concord — we sold out of 90% of our plants!🪲
