After carefully carrying this beauty through its winter dormancy, it’s finally happening—my one and only Pinguicula × scullyi ssp. scullyi is in flower! This natural hybrid is known for its broad green rosettes and stunning lavender-purple-blue blooms, and seeing it thrive after a tricky seasonal cycle feels like a real win. 💙

Temperate Pinguicula like this require a true winter rest, and if summer conditions aren’t just right—cool temps, good humidity, and strong light—they can struggle long-term. I only have this single plant for now, but maybe someday down the road I’ll be able to offer a few… for now, I’m just enjoying the moment 🌸I obtained this plant from carltoncarnivores

While Nepenthes don’t go dormant in the winter, we definitely notice fewer pitchers forming due to lower light levels. Our Nepenthes ‘Miranda’ are so big they hang along five 18-ft-long metal poles that run through our greenhouse, so they experience those natural seasonal light changes.🪳

Now that spring is here, we’re seeing a proliferation of pitchers! To encourage Nepenthes to re-pitcher, they need strong, bright light and higher humidity—although some species and hybrids can acclimate to typical household humidity. We should have several lush 8" hanging baskets available in the next month or so—stay tuned 🌿

✂️🌿 Everyone got a haircut this week.

We trimmed back last year’s growth on all of our Sarracenia just in time before the new spring growth begins to emerge. It’s always satisfying to reset the plants and make room for fresh, healthy pitchers.

All of our Sarracenia are grown in our large 4x8 water table beds, where they stay consistently moist and ready to take off as the season warms up.

Spring growth is right around the corner 🌱

Pretty sure this is Genlisea flexuosa and not a hybrid, but I welcome the corrections — especially since we also have Genlisea lobata × flexuosa and I’m not an expert on Genlisea (yet).

What I do love are their incredible corkscrew traps 🌀

Genlisea (often called corkscrew plants) are carnivorous plants that trap and digest tiny soil-dwelling organisms using specialized underground leaves. These leaves form twisted, spiral-shaped tubes that guide prey inward where they can’t escape — a really unique adaptation among carnivorous plants.

This species thrives in bright to strong light and enjoys the occasional tray flooding, along with a bimonthly foliar fertilizer to encourage a floriferous display - just like yesterday's Utricularia! The reason these flowers are so compact to each other is because the plant was grown very close to a grow light, which kept the growth tight and condensed.

Still learning these (even though I've had them for years), but absolutely fascinated by them 🌿🌀

I just broke this pot up of Utricularia warburgii. We only had one, and we’re excited to potentially offer it for the first time in the near future — it’s currently from our private collection.

The flowers are absolutely wild — they really do look like little ghosts with their arms stretched out and mouths wide open 👻🌸

Utricularia warburgii is a terrestrial bladderwort, meaning it lives in soil and uses tiny bladder-like traps to catch microscopic prey. The traps work by creating a vacuum, snapping open to suck in unsuspecting organisms — one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom.

It thrives in bright to strong light and enjoys the occasional tray flooding, along with a bimonthly foliar fertilizer to encourage a floriferous display. Given the right conditions, it can spread and form a beautiful mat of foliage topped with those delicate purple blooms.

We’ll keep everyone posted when it becomes available 🌿

Unboxing Borneo Exotics Import 📦

Clips from the past week as we unpacked and processed our latest Borneo Exotics Nepenthes import. Each plant is carefully inspected, sorted, and prepped for its next stage.

Most of the plants featured were pre-sold through the pre-order. The remaining plants are being acclimated and will be available locally in the coming months.

Our next Borneo Exotics pre-order will begin in July, with plants expected to ship around July 29th.

Our pre-orders are built over 4–5 months, with plants added incrementally as availability updates from Borneo Exotics. Once the order reaches size, we schedule the import.
